In Search of the Self
PRISCILA
FERNANDES
9th
MAY 2009 - 20th JUNE 2009
“In Search of the Self”, by Priscila Fernandes, reflects on conventions of presentation and the production of knowledge, revealing the processes by which we both learn and represent ideas.
In a didactic exercise of incongruous references, ranging from the Enlightenment individual to the Postmodern subject, Fernandes undertakes the mission of documenting an effort to find the ultimate representation for the notion of identity, and presents a theory based on the imagining of multiple personalities, as a reflection of the fragmented representation of identity in contemporary society.
Priscila Fernandes was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1981. She studied Painting at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and is presently attending the Master programme in Fine Art at the Piet Zwart Institute, in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Her work has gained international media recognition and artistic awards. She has lectured on various aspects of her research and artistic practice and exhibited in China, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland and Portugal. She lives and works in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
In her exceptionally well devised and organized installation, Priscila
Fernandes (who, for the record, is under the heading of painting and
not sculpture) comes across as being a more mature artist precisely
because of her critical distance from material that deals with fundamental
facets of identity. Fernandes, in fact, has devised two viable artistic
identities, Francisco J. and Ana Garcini. The former’s intricately
elaborated theory and practice of sandwich-eating, together with a terrifically
deadpan video, is worth careful study. But the essential point is that
an artist can deal genuinely and convincingly with complex issues of
identity outside of a gruelling mode of confessional autobiography.
