Deborah
Brown
Renowned in Ireland for her pioneering exploration of the medium of
fibre glass in the sixties, Brown has established herself as one of
the country’s leading sculptors and has achieved extensive international
acclaim. ‘Through the Rock’ her exhibition at Cavanacor
Gallery consists of a large selection of figurative works in bronze
and papier maché.
‘Through the Rock’ refers to the formative sculptural process
and sourcing of materials whereby Brown investigates the potential of
her medium and illustrates the fruits of her creative imagination. Her
diversity can be seen in this range of sculpture from carefully observed
animal and figure pieces to sublime imagined compositions of man pitted
against the elements. These she describes as individual ‘happenings’
or ‘scenarios.’ Despite appearances, these scenarios are
firmly grounded in reality and are inspired by incidents that have occurred
during the artist’s lifetime.
Her work is represented in many collections in Ireland and abroad, including
The Irish Museum of Modern Art, the BBC, the Ulster Museum, RTE, Bank
of Ireland, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery and the Arts Council. She
exhibits regularly in the Solomon Gallery, Dublin and the Shambles Gallery,
Hillsborough.
