Summer Group Exhibition Cavanacor Gallery 16th June – 29th September 2012

 

The Summer Group Exhibition at Cavanacor Gallery brings together five unique artists with several common threads running through their practice.

Visual artist and poet Huib Fens’ drawings and paintings from 2000 onwards, are mainly inspired by literary motifs. They often depict birth houses and working spaces of favorite writers, poets and composers. Not the shape of the building itself is source of inspiration, but the history and meaning of the building. He started some years ago a new series of paintings and photographs on the theme of the work spaces of favourite authors and artists. The underlying motif is the desire to dwell in these rooms, to sit and write or paint there. What unites these paintings is the presence of Huib Fens’s own table, chair and notebook. Huib Fens is a Professor of sculpture at Fontys Hogescholen. He is editor and founder at Aalse Pers Publishers, advisor in fine arts at city of Veldhoven and editor of Cahier ABV at ABV Tilburg.

Jennifer Trouton is a painter whose subject matter is popular culture. Much of her work deals with the loss of a generation and their culture and for herself a loss of innocence. What interests Trouton most is the way our personal histories are written into the space that we occupy. Trouton’s work has featured in group exhibitions nationally and internationally since graduating form the University of Ulster in the mid nineties. These include ‘Resolutions‘ at The Katzen Gallery, Washington DC, Naciente ù at the The Guayasamin Gallery, Cuba and ‘Through our eyes’ at the Drawing Centre, New York. Solo exhibitions include the I8th Street Gallery Los Angeles, Spectrum Gallery London, The Ashford Gallery Dublin and The Fenderesky Gallery Belfast. Previous awards include COE (Clare Morris Open Exhibition, Ireland) Adjudicators’ Award by Andrea Schlieker, the 4th Plinth project Trafalgar Square and a Golden Fleece Award hosted by the Liliias Mitchell Foundation. In 2007 Trouton was shortlisted for Ireland’s prestigious AIB Artist of Promise Award.

Sean Fingleton’s painting demonstrates a fervent passion for its subject matter: the landscapes and seascapes of Donegal, Dublin and Wicklow. His work forms part of the collections of the Arts Council, IMMA, Aras an Uachtarain, the OPW, the Royal Hospital in Gloucester, England and the European Parliament in Strasbourg among others. He has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and abroad. He has been the recipient of many prizes for his work, including a 1986 GPA Award, in 1993 The Fergus O'Ryan RHA Award and has been twice a prize-winner at the annual Claremorris Open Exhibition. Among his recent exhibitions he has featured in the RHA Exhibition in 2006, Greenstar Open Exhibition, Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, 2006, a solo exhibition at Cavancor Gallery, Donegal 2006, and also "A Moment in Time" Temple Bar Gallery 2005, Barbara Stanley Gallery London, Winter Exhibition 2005, Taylor Gallery Dublin, Christmas Show 2005, "From Landscape" - drawing exhibition, Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, 2005 and touring to Limerick, Galway and Cork and "Bearings" landscapes from the collection, Irish Museum of Modern Art, 2004.

The art practice of Kieran Meagher focuses on the themes of the natural environment. The recent paintings are to some extent created in situ from observation deep within a heavily overgrown area of an eighteenth century country estate by the river Liffey In this exhibition he shows forest spaces and figures. This unique place is the visual subject, but also the imaginative spark. Whilst the imagery and the generous use of paint are redolent of fertile growth, the work does in fact hint at “a topography of destruction” - to use W G Sebald’s great phrase. Kieran Meagher is an artist, researcher and teacher working at Limerick School of Art and Design, involved in art and design teacher education & higher degree education. He studied painting and printmaking at Limerick in the 1970s and has M Phil and PhD degrees from The University of Liverpool.

Unlike her earlier paintings where either abstraction or figuration was treated to a grand scale, Jacinta Feeney’s new works are intimate both in size and gesture. The works both invite and defy interpretation; the images are not predetermined but evolve over a long period of time. The stark backgrounds together with the skin like application of paint, placed layer upon layer stretched across the surfaces evoke reference to meanings, which are tightly structured. Jacinta Feeney studied in Preston, Lancashire and the Royal College of Art, London. She has been recipient of many prizes including the Claremorris Open Exhibition Student prize, Prince of Wales Scholarship from the Royal College of Art, Royal College of Art Travel Scholarship and several Arts Council awards.
