Matthew O’Kane : Solo Exhibition

20th October – 30th November 2007

'Perhaps influence by William Kentridge...is evident in Matthew O'Kane's capable animation, but his video of a winter train journey is particularly atmospheric.'

(Aidan Dunne The Irish Times 9th June 2006)

According to the artist; “Drawings and paintings of both national and international regions create subtle energy and movement. In contemporary society travel has increased and each individual conducts a personal journey as a clarification of his or her consciousness. “ He demonstrates relative interpretations of personal and universal experiences, this is the exploration of surroundings and influences, coupled with the observation of sociological phenomena of travelling and displacement.

Matthew O’Kane completed a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting in 2006 at the National College of Art and Design Dublin and a MSc in Multimedia at Dublin City University this year.

He was honoured with an important commission for the Schuster Gallery, Frankfurt in 2003. In 2004, his work was purchased for the Permanent Collection of the National College of Art and Design. Matthew exhibited in ‘New Irish Painting’ in the Context Gallery, Derry 2005 and also completed his Erasmus Exchange Programme to Krakow, Poland. Matthew’s work is represented in the Department of Justice and Office of Public Works. In 2007 he was short listed for a digital media award with Ashville Media Group and had a ‘New’ Three Person Exhibition at The Paul Kane Gallery in February and also featured in the Summer Group Exhibition 2007. He is included in the ‘Invited Artists’ Exhibition at Boyle Arts Festival, Roscommon.
