“The eye altering, alters all.”
William Blake
The characters in these paintings are young girls, most of them blindfolded. These Personas seem to be taking part in a mysterious play and the poetry of William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience comes to mind. The use of the blindfold in these works can be seen as a metaphor for innocence or the state of 'not knowing'. But also it can be perceived as a metaphor for experience of suppression, authority and conformity. The innocence of childhood is suspended or lost due to lack of freedom and the denial of feelings.
Source material includes found photographs, various props (ribbons, plastics, vintage clothes), and the artist's own photographs.
Bunello seeks simplicity in her paintings. The subtle, contemplative air of the works are juxtaposed with their psychological content and can lead the viewer into a direct contact with the fragile and transient nature of childhood.
